Post Modernism in Pynchon and Kingston
[ send me this paper ]
Surrealism and integrity are two ingredients that one generally doesn't expect at the same time and in the same place. Yet, both Thomas Pynchon and Maxine Hong Kingston have been able to meld the two into a coherent whole. This 5 page paper examines the postmodern stories: Pynchon's short story on Entropy, and Kingston's novel of the Tripmaster Monkey and His Fake Book, in an effort to verify their ability to embody the principles of postmodernism with their temporal and cultural settings, as well as the reliance on the visual image to convey the essence of their respective morals. Asian Mothers and American Daughters
[ send me this paper ]
The trend toward multicultural understanding has made an impact in Asian literature in the past decade. With the expanded interest in cultural perspectives has come an increase in literature specific to intercultural and familial relationships. The relationship between mother and daughter has always been considered as complex and compelling and the relationship between a mother born in another country and a daughter born in the United States has special interest in this day and age. This 8 page paper examines the relationships between the women in The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan and The Woman Warrior by Maxine Hong Kingston as defined by the cultural representation of language and the use of language to bridge the gap between the Chinese world and the American. Bibliography lists 8 sources.
