Media and the News -- The Chicken and the Egg Question
[ send me this paper ]
This 10 page report discusses the modern media and the extent to which it is responsible for making the news or breaking the news. Increasingly, the line between reporting the news and participating in the news has become blurred for the modern media. If the media does not show up to cover a “newsworthy” event, was it really “newsworthy?” In an age of instant communication, in which there is little time for reflection, accuracy, balance or integrity -- the media regularly creates the impression that sleaze, is everywhere and that nothing is sacred. So which comes first, media or the news, the chicken or the egg? Bibliography lists 8 sources.

"Facing Probes, Governor to Resign": A Review of the 2004 New York Times Article
[ send me this paper ]
A 3 page review of a June 2004 article from the New York Times concerning the resignation of Governor John G. Rowland. The author of this paper observes that the article is written from a strictly objective view and its intent is obviously to outline the circumstances surrounding a tedious political situation. The author concludes that the article does an exceptional job of reporting in a non-biased and informative way, of providing information not only on the wrongdoing surrounding the case but also other important details, perhaps the most important of which is the summary of what this resignation will mean for Connecticut. No additional sources are listed.

"The Movement of the Simplification of Spelling in the English Language"
[ send me this paper ]
A 7 page overview of the move to change the way we spell in the English language. While in the U.S. and the U.K. alike changes in spelling have been attempted to be implemented via a formal route, for the most part change has only occurred informally. We have generated formal proceedings and approvals throughout the years, even seen Presidential orders and House of Commons Bills but old spellings have stayed staunchly in place. The informal verses the formal aspects of the movement to simplify spelling, however, has been somewhat more successful. Bibliography lists 3 sources.
